When the producers of AMC's hit show Mad Men needed an unparalleled status symbol for Don Draper to drive, there could only be once choice: The incomparable Imperial Convertible. You may also recognize this model as the Old Man's ride on History's Pawn Stars. In fact, this exact car was used in Pawn Stars On the Road, driven by Rick Harrison.
Penned by the same designer as our '63 Lincoln convertible "Elwood" - Mr. Elwood Engel - our Imperial Convertible sports a very similar style and flair, in an even more exclusive package -- only 514 of these ultra-premium cars were built. This Imperial knows equally well how to provide that perfect mix of Sporty and Elegant -- this time in a rich Ruby exterior, which photographs black at night -- and a spacious air-conditioned interior in beautiful white leather. Ride from your ceremony to reception with the top up, in climate-controlled comfort -- and depart your reception in fun, top-down convertible style!
Considered by many to be the finest American car of its time, Imperial advertisements boasted "more standard luxuries than a Rolls-Royce... thoughtful extravagances which make the Imperial Crown the incomparable luxury car in America, if not the world". Mechanix Illustrated Magazine tested this car, and their verdict was well-put: Even the Rolls is no match for the Imperial in actual comfort, ride, and performance. Many see Imperial as the successor to legendary auto manufacturer Packard -- termed by many as "The American Rolls-Royce". As Rolls-Royce collectors, we think the comparison is valid. The quality and luxury of these Imperials of the 1950s and 60s is truly second to none. We're honored to own two of these fine cars -- this one, and another rare example whose restoration we are looking forward to beginning soon.
What's in a name?
The name "Donald" is in honor of our founder's Dad, who we restored this car for; to our friend Donald, who first introduced us to Imperials -- and was in attendance the day we purchased this car at auction, and for AMC's Don Draper, who drove a sister car in the hit show Mad Men!
